Hello, burned out counselor here checking in.
How did I get here? I took steps to figure out why I was feeling burned out and what I prefer doing instead during these periods within my day.
If you were like me, you are tired of long hours, constantly being pulled in multiple directions, and managing an overwhelming amount of tasks…to name a few things. Your burnout may look different from my view, and that is okay. The key is, how do we figure out how to change our work dynamics.
The first step is, what do you value?
Within my distress of feeling overwhelmed and burned out, I took a step back to think about what I value. A value can be defined as your heart’s desires for how you want your life to look or what behaviors you would like to display.
For me, I value peace.
Peace for me looks like actions and goals. Now, this is not always the best way to look at your values after you have identified them. So, if you were like me, you may have attached a value with a goal. When choosing to take a job overseas, I saw this as me wanting peace so I decided to do what I love in a different setting.
If you are struggling to identify a value and/or what is meaningful for you. Here is a free list of values to assist you within your journey.
Many describe a value as a word that describes how you would like to behave in the moment and throughout your life.
DO YOU FEEL DISCONNECTED IN HOW WOULD LIKE YOUR LIFE TO LOOK AND FEEL?
After feeling like I was starting to disconnect from the educational factory of overworking and being underpaid, I had to sit down and think about what I wanted from life.
There may be times where you cannot focus on anything else, but your thoughts. My thoughts were “I am tired”, “I have no control over my time within the day”, “things are not going as I planned”.
Feel free to take time to think about your thoughts that may take up space within your mind throughout the day.
It is so easy to be removed from our life outside of our thoughts. I caught myself not having as much time for my family, friends, and doing the things I loved.
So, to take the power away from the thoughts that were taking up too much space in my mind, I started to categorize my thoughts.
I started to think about which parts of my life that I wanted to change, and the parts that I enjoyed. I thought of my work and education. I thought about my travels and future trips. I even thought about my relationships, health and personal growth. This can also be called the themes within your life’s compass.
You see how the Counselor Compass is guiding you through understanding your life’s compass… yeah, you’re welcome 🙂
Through observing my thoughts, I was about to take a step by to view my thoughts differently. I was able to provide distance between myself and my thoughts. The space I needed from my overcrowded thoughts were now in categorized boxes within my mind.
